What to check on a used shear
- Cut a test strip across the full blade length and check it for squareness and burr.
- Inspect both blade edges for chips, dullness and how many times they have been rotated.
- Check the blade gap setting and the gibs for even clearance end to end.
- Test the hold-downs, treadle return spring or clutch and brake on powered shears.
- Confirm the backgauge, squaring arm and front support arms are present and straight.
- Verify voltage and phase on powered units and the floor space the machine needs.
